Background:
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) have been established for 70 years since 1948.  The UDHR outlines the universal standard of human rights and serves as the basis for all international conventions for human rights protection. However, up until now, 30 articles in the Declaration have not been fully adopted in many countries in the world. The rise of populism in the global political climate further poses challenges on the implementation of human rights in both global and local context.

In Hong Kong, the recent discussions on human rights and social movements tend to focus on civil and political rights. Economic, social and cultural rights are still not widely attended, especially the rights of the marginalized communities, including migrants, ethnic minorities, women and sexual minorities. With regards to the 70th anniversary of UDHR, we would like to take this opportunity to examine the achievements and challenges of women’s rights and gender equality in Hong Kong and discuss how to bring the agenda to the next stage.
