Women In Leadership
A Talk by Jackie Ashley, President of Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge
19 Sept. 2017 (Tue) 2:30-4:00PM
Room 505, Esther Lee Building,
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Abstract: Why do so many companies still have no female senior executives? Why do some political parties steadfastly refuse to appoint a woman to the top job? And why has there been so little progress over the past decade? This talk will explore some of the possible reasons for the current situation, from gender stereotyping to education and outright discrimination. Reflecting on her own experiences in political journalism and also her current role as President of Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, Jackie will look at ideas for moving the situation forward so that in future we no longer need to ask “Where are the women?”
The most recent UK election returned 208 women MPs so currently women make-up 32% of the House of Commons. A study by McKinsey showed that companies with a diverse board are 35% more likely to have financial returns above the respective industry average. What actions are needed to support and exceed these improvements? Why are some areas showing improvements and others not? And can we make the new world of technology and social media a more welcoming place for women?
