We are pleased to share with you the Forum on Women in Leadership: Opportunities and Challenges in Higher Educational Sector held by British Council on 6 March 2024.
Our Co-director Prof. Susanne Choi will be the keynote speaker in this forum.

Date: Wednesday 6 March 2024
Time: 2-7pm
Venue: Shanghai Room, Level 8, Cordis Hotel, Hong Kong
Address: 555 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Prof. Susanne Choi, Co-Director of the Gender Research Centre, was invited to deliver a public lecture titled “From Barbie to #MeToo: Is There a Gender War?”. The event attracted a full house of participants from diverse backgrounds and age groups, including a remarkable number of men interested in exploring contemporary gender issues.

In her talk, Prof. Choi unpacked the notion of a “gender war” with clarity and depth, translating complex sociological and feminist debates into accessible and engaging insights for both seasoned audiences and newcomers. Her presentation sparked strong interest and reflection among attendees.

The one-hour Q&A session reflected the vibrancy of the discussion, with questions spanning Hong Kong’s gender landscape, transgender rights, sex work, and the role of religion in shaping gender norms. The event became a dynamic public forum for dialogue, critical thinking, and open exchange.

The Gender Research Centre congratulates Prof. Choi on her impactful contribution to public engagement on gender issues and looks forward to supporting more opportunities for scholarly outreach and dialogue.

Colleagues from the Gender Research Centre participated in the Hong Kong Sociological Association’s 24th Annual Conference on 3 December 2023. Together, we shared and discussed research on how new media technologies are reshaping dating practices and experiences of dating violence among young people in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China.
The Gender Research Centre will continue to engage in conversations that address urgent social issues and contribute to public knowledge through collaborative scholarship.

The Gender Research Centre is delighted to congratulate Prof. Susanne Choi, our Co-Director, on being awarded the prestigious “Leverhulme Visiting Professorship” by the Leverhulme Trust. This esteemed appointment recognises Prof. Choi’s significant scholarly contributions and her leadership in advancing gender research.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Choi and wish her every success during this remarkable academic journey.

The Gender Research Centre extends its warmest congratulations to Prof. Susanne Choi, Co-Director of the Centre, on being awarded a General Research Fund (GRF) grant from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. Her funded project, titled “Gender, Power, and Online Sexual Harassment: A Comparative Study of Four Cities in East Asia,” will investigate the intersections of gender, technology, and digital forms of sexual violence. This groundbreaking study examines how online sexual harassment manifests across different cultural and urban contexts, offering important insights into power dynamics in the digital era. The project aims to contribute robust empirical evidence and critical analysis to a growing field of global concern. We celebrate this significant achievement and look forward to supporting Prof. Choi’s impactful research.
